Biden with commanding lead over other 2020 Democrats in Missouri, polling shows

Former Vice President Joe Biden has a commanding lead over the other 2020 Democratic presidential candidates in Missouri, according to recent state polling.
In fact, 34 percent of voters who are likely to participate in the Democratic primary surveyed by Show Me Victories, a St. Louis-based communications firm, selected Biden as their candidate. Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren garnered 22 percent, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders solidified 14 percent, and South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg got the support 10 percent of voters.
Rounding out the bottom contenders were, in order: Sen. Kamala Harris, a different contender, former Rep. Beto O’Rourke, Sen. Amy Klobuchar, Sen. Cory Booker, entrepreneur Andrew Yang, and former Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Director Julian Castro.
Biden was in the St. Louis area for fundraisers earlier this week.
But the executive directors of both parties in Missouri suggested labeling Biden as the frontrunner in Missouri might be a bit premature.
“The primary is a ways away still, and if candidates want to win Missouri, a state that has historically had competitive Democratic presidential primaries, the candidates need to make their way here and speak to Missourians,” Lauren Gepford, head of the Missouri Democratic Party, said.
Jean Evans, the Missouri GOP executive director, pointed to Auditor Nicole Galloway, who has launched a gubernatorial bid against Republican incumbent Mike Parson. Evans argued Galloway is more aligned with Sanders or Warren.
“When the Missouri Democratic candidate for governor won’t say whether she supports Joe Biden, it’s hard to make the case that he is the frontrunner for Democrats here,” Evans told The Missouri Times.
Show Me Victories surveyed 400 likely Democratic voters regarding the candidates after the latest Democratic debate on Sept. 12. The interviews were conducted using interactive voice response technology from Sept. 13 to Sept. 16 with a margin of error of 5 percent.
Of those surveyed, 77 percent were Democrats, 22 percent independents, and 2 percent were Republicans. The majority of respondents were from St. Louis and Kansas City, respectively.
Additionally, 57 percent of those polled were female and 43 percent were male. The majority of individuals surveyed were between the ages of 45 and 64.
Participants were also asked if they watched any of the Sept. 12 debate. Sixty-two percent of voters said yes; only 38 percent said no.
Missouri’s voters follow national polling. Biden leads national polls with an average of 29 percent, according to Real Clear Politics’ aggregated polling data. Warren, Sanders, Buttigieg, Harris, Yang, O’Rourke, Booker, Klobuchar, and Castro follow.
